Cabinets are honest about one thing: they hide. A blotter is honest about another: it holds what you are actually using.
Most “workspaces” are cabinets with a search bar. They congratulate you for filing. They do not help you leave a page in the middle of the desk.
Cool gray on purpose
The blotter is cool so the sheet can be warm. If the interface competes with the page, the page loses. Quire’s desk is a felt gray. The paper is the event.
What sits on it
Sheets, nested cards, a clip, a ribbon. Not a sidebar that recites the company’s information architecture. The architecture lives in the nest, which is still a document.
